
Vice Admiral Antonette Wemyss-Gorman stands as one of the most influential regional military leader of her generation and a global pioneer in defence and security leadership. In January 2022, she made history when she was appointed Chief of Defence Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), becoming the only woman in the world at the time to lead a national armed force.
With more than three decades of distinguished military service, Vice Admiral Wemyss-Gorman has built a remarkable career defined by excellence, strategic leadership, and a steadfast commitment to national and international security. Over her 34 years in the JDF, she has earned some of Jamaica’s highest honours, including the Order of Distinction (Commander Class), the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service, the Military Commendation Medal, and the Medal of Honour for General Service.
A respected voice on global security and gender inclusion, Vice Admiral Wemyss-Gorman served as Chair of the Women, Peace and Security Chiefs of Defence Network (WPS CHODs) from 2023 to 2024, advancing international dialogue and action on inclusive security leadership. Her influence extends well beyond the Caribbean, earning her prestigious international recognition, including the Admiral Padilla Order of Naval Merit (Grand Cross) from the Colombian Navy in 2023 and the Officer of the Legion of Honour from the French Republic in 2024—France’s highest distinction that can be conferred upon a foreign national.

In 2022, she was named among the World Economic Forum’s Top 10 Women Who Made History, recognizing her historic appointment and global impact. She has also received numerous leadership awards from organizations such as the United Way Women’s Leadership Initiative, the Women in Caribbean Maritime Association, and the Mona School of Business and Management at The University of the West Indies. She is pivotal as a change agent for professional military education and youth engagement as the Vice Chancellor of the Caribbean Military Academy and Chairman of the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force Committee.
