Battle of Britain 80th Anniversary Wreath Laying Ceremony

Tuesday, September 15, 2020 marked the 80th anniversary of Battle of Britain Sunday. In a ceremony to commemorate the anniversary the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Jamaica Branch, held a Wreath Laying ceremony at the Cenotaph inside National Heroes Park. In attendance were His Excellency Sir Patrick Allen, Governor General of Jamaica, Lieutenant General Rocky Meade, Chief of Defence Staff, representatives from various commonwealth countries and a number of senior JDF officers.

The traditional meet and greet between the Governor General and veterans of the war did not happen however, due to COVID-19 restrictions but the event was well attended.

The Battle of Britain was an important battle in World War II. Sunday, September 15, 1940 became what former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Sir Winston Churchill called one of the most “decisive battles of the war” after Germany was repelled and ultimately defeated.
