Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Maxwell Gordon is the Acting President of the Caribbean Military Academy. He attained his secondary education at the St Mary High where he was actively involved in drama, debate, and the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force.
He enlisted in the JDF as a potential officer in August 2002 and underwent his initial officer training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. On his return to Jamaica, he was commissioned at the rank of Second Lieutenant and assigned to the First Battalion the Jamaica Regiment (1 JR).
After serving in 1 JR in various capacities, he was transferred to Headquarters Jamaica Defence Force in 2008 and appointed Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Defence Staff. In 2011, he was transferred to the Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (2 JR) where, as a captain, he acted as officer commanding (OC) Charlie Company until being promoted in December 2013 and being appointed OC. He then went on to serve as an Assistant Staff Officer with responsibility for administration (SO2 J1) in 2014 and then appointed OC ‘B’ Coy 1 JR in 2016. He was a member of the directing staff for the 2017 serial of the Caribbean Junior Command and Staff Course (CJCSC). He then served a guest instructor at the Canadian Army Combat Training Centre (Tactics School) where he instructed on the Army Tactical Operations Course and the Infantry Dismounted Company Commanders Course. He was the Standards Officer for CJCSC 1801 and a member of the directing staff for CJCSC 1802. In December 2018 he was posted to the JDF Air Wing and appointed Second-in- Command in early 2019. On the 1 July 2020 he was appointed acting Commanding Officer of the Fourth Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (4 JR) until the 1 September 2020 when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Commanding Officer. He was then appointed Assistant Inspector General (Investigations and Legal) 2022, prior to taking up the current role of Acting President of the Caribbean Military Academy since 26 August 2024.
Since joining the JDF he has attended and successfully completed courses at the Jamaica Constabulary Force Staff College (renamed National Police College), Caribbean Junior Command and Staff College, Jamaica; the Manoeuvre Centre of Excellence, Fort Benning, Georgia, USA and Permanent Joint Headquarter, London, UK. His most recent professional development course took him to Canadian Forces College, Canada for the Joint Command and Staff Programme.
Lt Col Gordon holds a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level IV in Assessment; Bachelor of Law (Honours) (University of London); a Master of Science (Distinction) in National Security and Strategic Studies (University of the West Indies, Mona); and a Master of Defence Studies (Royal Military College, Canada).
He was awarded the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service; the Medal of Honour for General Service; Medal of Honour for Long Service and Good Conduct; the Jamaica Military Commendation Medal; and the Queen Platinum Jubilee Medal.
Lt Col Gordon currently volunteers as chair/president of the board of directors of the Jamaica Defence Force Credit Union; vice-president of the Royal Air Forces Association Jamaica 580 Branch and is also the production manager for the Caribbean Journal of Strategic and Security Studies.
