Colonel (Col) Rohan Floyd Johnson joined the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in October 1992. He attended the Commando Training Centre, Royal Marines in 1993 and graduated with the coveted ‘Green Beret’ in 1994. Col Johnson attended the Army Operations Course at the Canadian Army Command and Staff College in 2004 and the Command and General Staff Course at the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth in 2013.
He has held a number of appointments to include Platoon Commander, Training Officer at the Military Training Wing, Newcastle, Assistant Staff Officer Training, Headquarters Defence Force, Officer Commanding, Deputy Inspector General (Investigations and Boards), Deputy Inspector General (Ceremonials and Inspections), Second in Command and Commanding Officer of the Second Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (2 JR). He also served as SO1 J2/J3 (Operations and Intelligence)/ Director of the Joint Information and Operations Centre (JIOC) and was the first Executive Officer of the Jamaica Regiment (Infantry Brigade) which assumed Initial Operational Capabilities in 2019. Col Johnson also held the appointment of Inspector General at HQ JDF where he had responsibility for Compliance, Inspections and Ceremonials and is currently appointed as the Colonel General Staff with principal staff responsibility for operations, intelligence, inter-agency and defence diplomacy matters.
Col Johnson was deployed as Platoon Commander in the United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNMIH) 1996 and Contingent Commander for Task Force North in the Eastern Caribbean during Cricket World Cup 2007. He was also appointed to sit as President on the first Ordinary Court Martial, constituted of military officers from CARICOM member states, convened by the Barbados Defence Force, in April 2019.
He has been awarded the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service, Medal of Honour for General Service with Clasp (Haiti), the United Nations Medal for Service in Military Operations (Haiti) and The Queen’s Jubilee Medal.
Col Johnson is the holder of a double Major Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations and Psychology, a Master of Science degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the University of the West Indies, and a Master of Military Arts and Science degree from the US Army Staff College, Fort Leavenworth. He also has a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London and has been called to the Bar as an Attorney-at-law in Jamaica. He is also appointed as a Justice of the Peace for the parish of Kingston.
Col Johnson is married to Simone and has one son, Mathieu. He is an ardent football player and loves to listen to music.
