Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Everton Black was appointed Brigade Sergeant Major (BSM) of The Jamaica Regiment on 17 August 2023.
WO1 BLACK was born in the parish of St. Catherine on 19 September 1974 and grew up in the parish of Westmoreland where he received primary and secondary school education at Mount Grace All Age and Manning’s School, respectively. He graduated from Manning’s School in 1992, where he attained four passes in the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC). After graduating high school, he worked as a Lab Analyst at the Frome Sugar Factory.
On 17 July 1994, he enlisted in the Jamaica Defence Force, completing basic training at the Newcastle Training Depot in the hills of St Andrew. Following this he was posted to the Second Battalion, The Jamaica Regiment. He attended several courses and training exercises locally and internationally. Among those were State Protocol and Business Etiquette Course, Supervisory Management Course, NVQJ Military Operations Level 2, Advance Drill Course, Warrant Officer Course, First Sergeant Course (USASMA, Fort Bliss, Texas), Instructor Development Course, Internal Security Operation Cadre, Army Basic Instructor Course (Fort Benning GA), Small Group Instructor Course (Fort Benning GA), NCO Professional Development Course at Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) Fort Benning GA, Medical Combat Life Saver, Land Navigation and Reconnaissance Course, All Arms Service Fund Course, and Information Technology Course.
WO1 BLACK served as Drill Instructor on the Advance Drill Course 2018 and 2019, Directing Staff on the Warrant Officer Course 2015 to 2018, Chief Instructor Potential Non-Commissioned Officer Course (PNCO) 2016 and 2007, and was Course Warrant Officer for the Caribbean Junior Command and Staff Course 2012-2014. He was attached to the WHINSEC, Fort Benning, as a Partner Nation Instructor (PNI) from 2009-2011.
He served in many appointments throughout his career, namely Regimental Sergeant Major (Ceremonial) at the Inspector General Department, Detachment Sergeant Major (DSM) of the Caribbean Infantry Training Centre (CITC), DSM of Headquarters Administrative Detachment, Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Headquarter Company First Battalion Jamaica Regiment (1 JR), CSM Charlie Company 1 JR, Company Quartermaster Sergeant Headquarter Company 1 JR, Training Senior NCO at the Caribbean Junior Command and Staff College, Platoon Sergeant, Recruit Instructor, Section Commander and Section Second in Command.
WO1 BLACK is a Justice of the Peace. He is also the recipient of the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service, The Jamaica Military Commendation Medal for Excellence, Medal of Honour for General Service 2018, Medal of Honour for Long Service and Good Conduct, Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal and Meritorious Service Medal and Certificate of Commendation for outstanding meritorious service while assigned to Roy P Benavedes NCO Academy, where he also received a Master Instructor Certificate. He received great honour when he was inducted in the WHINSEC Hall of Fame on 24 September 2024.
WO1 BLACK is married to Bridgette and is a proud father of Josh, Janelle, Jaden andJaheem. He enjoys browsing the internet, playing Volleyball and Table Tennis.
